SF Police Look To Crack Down On Mission District Gang Violence

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco police are stepping up enforcement in the Mission District after a series of suspected gang-related stabbings and shootings.

Police Capt. Greg Corrales, head of the Mission Station, told the San Francisco Chronicle that stopping violence in the neighborhood was the department's top priority.

Police blame the violence, which began last week and included a fatal shooting, on the rivalry between Norteno and Sureno gang members.

Police said 24-year-old Aldo Troncoso was shot early Saturday on Sureno turf. When a memorial to him was trashed a few days later, police believe the Surenos sought payback, opening fire at a 26-year-old-man on Norteno turf on Wednesday. The victim was struck once, but survived.

No arrests have been made in either shooting.
