South Bay Car Stop Yields 40 Pounds Of Meth

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – A woman in Santa Clara County was arrested after nearly 40 pounds of methamphetamine was found hidden in her car, authorities said Tuesday.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Rick Sung said a number of the agency's meth drug enforcement detectives conducted a traffic stop on a PT Cruiser on Highway 152 near Highway 101 last Friday night.

"The detectives were able to locate approximately 39 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in various compartments within the vehicle," Sung said. "Inside the dash, inside the blinker housing units and in the wheel wells."

He said the drugs carry a street value estimated at $430,000.

Authorities arrested the driver, a 54-year-old woman from Tijuana, Mexico. She has been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of possession and transportation of methamphetamine along with importing a controlled substance into the state.

She was remained held Tuesday without bail.

Special agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Santa Clara police K-9 unit assisted detectives with the search.

An investigation revealed that the woman entered the state through the Otay Mesa service port on Friday, allegedly to sell the drugs in San Jose, officials said.
