Good Question: Why Do Carpool Lanes On I-80 Require 3 People?
(CBS 5) – Many Bay Area commuters know about the tougher carpool requirements on this highway. Geraldine Carine asked this Good Question: Why is I-80 the only place in the Bay Area that requires 3 or more to carpool?
ANSWER: According to John Goodwin of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, that stretch of Interstate 80 is among the busiest stretches of roadway in the Bay Area. 3 people are required to use the carpool lane in order to make a dent in traffic.
Goodwin said the carpool lane on Interstate 80 has been there for more than 40 years. There are are about 275 miles of carpool lanes in the Bay Area.
