America's Cup May Boost Plan To Extend Historic SF Streetcar Line

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- The large crowds expected when San Francisco hosts the America's Cup in 2013 are being used to boost plans to extend a historic city streetcar line.

The National Park Service released a draft environmental impact statement on Friday of its proposal to extend the F-line streetcars from Fisherman's Wharf to Fort Mason.

Fort Mason is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Park officials say the extension is needed to improve access to the Fort Mason Center, a popular destination that draws hundreds of thousands of people each year. Most of those people currently drive to the center.

Civic advocates tell the San Francisco Chronicle there is an even greater need for the $29 million project with thousands of people who want to watch the America's Cup expected to descend on the area.
