Sunday Streets Event Renewed In San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Although the wet weather reduced the turnout, San Francisco kicked off its annual Sunday Streets event on the Embarcadero on Sunday.

Constance Cavallas was among those taking the opportunity to enjoy a ride along the Embarcadero, which was free of cars, from China Basin to Fisherman's Wharf.

"It's blissful. I love riding around in Sunday Streets. It's open, you feel extra safe and free," she said. "It's easier to smile at people when you don't have to pay attention to traffic."

Sunday's event was the first of nine this year, with a major street closed to cars each time.

Kate McCarthy with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition said all the strollers and riders will help the city meet its goal of having 20 percent of its trips made by bike by 2020.

"A lot of people ride Sunday Streets for the first time and they start to learn that they can be comfortable getting around town walking," said McCarthy. "Some people don't even realize how close together two spots are until they walk along Sunday Streets or ride their bikes for the first time."

The next Sunday Streets event will be along the Great Highway and through Golden Gate Park on April 10.
