Closed Stretch Of Highway 1 Near Big Sur Due To Open In April

MONTEREY COUNTY (CBS / AP) -- A section of Highway 1 in the Big Sur region that was closed last week when a portion of the roadway crumbled into the ocean is expected to remain closed through the middle of April.

State Department of Transportation officials said Monday that they expect to reopen the scenic stretch of the highway between Carmel and Big Sur by April 16.

In announcing the reopening date, officials also said they have awarded a $2.5 million contract to Oakland-based Condon-Johnson & Associates to stabilize what's left of the crumbling roadway.

The closure runs from just north of the community of Big Sur to about 15 miles south of Carmel.

The closure cuts off access from the north to many of the region's popular destinations.

Travelers are advised to take inland Highway 101 to Highway 46 to access Big Sur from the south.
