Tiburon Boats Drift Ashore After Weekend Storm

TIBURON (CBS 5) -- A dozen boats broke free of their moorings or anchors in Tiburon during this past weekend's storm and washed ashore at Strawberry Point on Monday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Two of the vessels were motorized, and the Coast Guard's pollution control team placed boom around them as a precaution in case there was a fuel spill, Petty Officer Kevin Metcalf said.

No spills were detected, he said.

The other 10 vessels are sailboats, and all of the boats were believed to have been moored or anchored in Tiburon and drifted into the Richardson Bay after breaking loose, Metcalf said.

The owners were responsible for getting the boats off the shore, either by guiding them back into the water at high tide around midnight or getting them onto a boat trailer and driving them off the beach, Metcalf said.

The Coast Guard urged boat owners to check their vessels' mooring lines and anchors in advance of rough weather, Metcalf said.
