San Francisco's Muni Chief May Be Asked To Leave

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) --- This week promises to be a bumpy ride for the man who oversees the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, as the agency's board will consider asking Executive Director Nathaniel Ford to step down because of worries that he is not committed to the job.

Ford's search for a new job went public a few weeks ago when his possible appointment as head of the Airports Authority in Washington D.C. was postponed indefinitely. Now there are questions about whether he is committed to his current job, and a special board meeting was set to be held Tuesday morning to consider whether he should be asked to leave.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

Board President Tom Nolan said Ford has been a great asset to the SFMTA, which operates the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) and the city's Department of Parking & Traffic, but his on-going job search is an issue.

"It's very important to all of us to have somebody who's totally committed to this organization," he said.

Commissioner Cheryl Brickman expressed concerned as well. She said it hurts morale when the head of the agency has one foot out the door.

If the members of the MTA Board do ask Ford for his resignation, he'll have to be paid almost $400, 000 for early termination of his contract.
