Three Arrested In Gun Incidents At Berkeley High School

BERKELEY (KCBS) – There were two separate gun-related incidents at Berkeley High School on Tuesday, resulting in the arrest of three students.

Berkeley Police said a maintenance worker heard a gunshot in a boy's bathroom and saw two teens running from the scene.  No one was injured by the gunshot.

KCBS' Tim Ryan Reports:

After detaining the students, officers eventually found a handgun. A short time later, a tip came in of another student with a gun on campus.

"If there is any type of silver lining in this situation, it's that the second weapon that we recovered was not loaded," said Berkeley High School Principal Pasquale Scuderi.

He said security will be stepped up on campus and could include metal detectors.

"We're going to do everything we can, in terms of increasing supervision, doing some focus groups, bringing in kids to try to understand from their perspective what the problem is," said Scuderi. "We'll take every precaution we can to try to keep the campus safe. But the larger question is where are these guns coming from and how are they getting to my kids so easily."

Students were arrested in both January and February of this year at Berkeley High School in gun-related incidents. And there was also an incident at Berkeley Technical High School, which resulted in arrests earlier this month.

All three students that were arrested on Tuesday not only face criminal charges, but expulsion as well.
