Proposal To Charge Tour Buses In San Francisco's Alamo Square

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The parade of tour buses bringing visitors to see San Francisco's famous Painted Ladies houses remain a headache for some locals who say they clog the streets and disturb the peace. But there may be a way for the city to make some money off the Alamo Square attraction.

While Fisherman's Wharf and other popular tourist spots have designated tour bus parking, buses coming to Alamo Square have to circle, double park, or pull into a MUNI stop.

KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:

Lisa Zahner, the president of the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association, suggests City Hall charges operators a fee to park in a dedicated spot, taking them out of the way of traffic. She would like the money to go towards maintaining the park which has seen gardeners less and less.

"We haven't had a gardener here for six weeks," she said. "Especially after the storms you really see it."

The idea is getting a warm reception at City Hall where there's already a proposal to restrict the use of amplified loudspeakers.
