2 Burglary Suspects Arrested, 1 At Large After Hayward Manhunt

HAYWARD (KCBS) - Hayward Police have arrested two burglary suspects following door-to-door searches on Wednesday. One burglar remained at large Wednesday afternoon and authorities said that he likely left the area.

KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:

The search started around 9:30 am Wednesday when police received a call from a resident on Leeward Street that the house was being burglarized.

"The first officer on scene saw a vehicle revving its engine and driving quickly towards him," said Hayward Police Lieutenant Roger Keener. "That vehicle crashed into his vehicle disabling both, and three subjects got out of that vehicle. He attempted to detain one, but was unable to."

Police then began searching for the suspects house by house.

Officers found one of the men at about 12:45 p.m. in a shed behind a home on Darwin Street.

The man allegedly refused to comply with police commands, so a K-9 unit was used to take him into custody, Keener said. The man was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Less than two hours later, the search focused on a house in the 2800 block of Darwin Street. A crisis negotiation team was called the home.

"Oddly enough, the suspect answered the phone and identified himself as the person we were looking for," Keener said. "Ultimately, he did come to the front door and surrendered."

Police cordoned off the area for several hours as SWAT and canine units went door-to-door to search for the suspects.
