March Rains Causing Problems For South Bay Homeowners

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – Some residents who live in the hills overlooking San Jose's Almaden Valley are now facing major problems following last month's rain storms.

Lana Sucala and her family built what they called their "dream home" in 2005 in the hills off of Old Almaden Road.

But following the March storms, eroding soil underneath the home's foundation is causing her driveway to buckle and crack, concrete retaining walls to split and the stairway to the front door is separating from the house.

KCBS' Betsy Gebhart Reports:

"Today the cracks are in front of the house. But we don't know what's going to happen tomorrow," she said.

Sucala said at her next door neighbor's house, there have been several gas line breaks and Pacific Gas and Electric crews are out inspecting the line almost everyday. They have also been forced to evacuate the area four times.

But despite all the problems and safety concerns, Sucala said she and her family are staying put, as she's not sure if anyone else would want to move into her "dream house."
