OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The pilot of a small single-engine Navion plane died after crashing into the water near the Oakland International Airport Sunday afternoon, according to police and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Police and airport officials responded to reports of a small plane similar to a Cessna plane—crashing into the water behind Oakland International Airport about 4 p.m., Oakland police Officer Kevin McDonald said.
FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane either crashed or crash-landed into the water after taking off out of Oakland about 3:40 p.m.
KCBS’ Bob Butler Reports:
Responding paramedics were dispatched in a single ambulance, and the pilot of the plane was reported dead shortly after officials arrived, according to the FAA and Oakland Fire Department.

My heart breaks for this pilot’s family. I lost my husband, Steve, on 9/11/7. He was killed while testing a plane just prior to the Reno Air Races, in Reno, NV.

We were at the San Leandro Marina Park when this happened and we saw the firemen going out to help… We feel terrible for the pilot and his family!

“High Flight”
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

We tried to save him but to no avail. We dug his head free of the mud. There was no pulse. Hopefully he died on impact, quickly and without pain.

My condolences to you and your family. Apparently your father ditched the plane to avoid a family picnicking in the filed where he was going to make an emergency landing. That makes him a hero in my book. His selflessness in a time of danger is an example for others to follow. Hopefully this helps infuse your sadness with well-deserved pride in your father.
