Family Escapes Redwood City Mobile Home Fire

REDWOOD CITY (CBS SF) - Six people escaped from a Redwood City home that caught fire early Monday morning while the family was sleeping, a fire battalion chief said.

The Redwood City Fire Department received a report of a mobile home fire at 3015 E. Bayshore Road at about 2:10 a.m., Battalion Chief Steve Cavallero said.

When firefighters arrived to the Harbor Village Mobile Home Park, a mother and five children between the ages of 7 and 17 had already escaped, he said.

The mom woke up because she smelled smoke. She yelled for the kids to wake up and then went down the hallway, where she saw flames behind the washer and dryer.

She couldn't return to where the children were located and escaped through the front door, Cavallero said. Her 17-year-old son woke up the other children and helped them escape through a bedroom window. One child escaped through a bathroom window.

Four of the children, a 9-year-old girl, a 7-year-old boy, a 15-year-old boy, and the 17-year-old lived at the home. A 13-year-old boy was a friend of the family who was spending the night, he said.

Everyone was evaluated for minor smoke inhalation. No one was transported to the hospital.

The cause of the fire, which was controlled at about 2:45 a.m., is being investigated.

Damage estimates are between $135,000 and $140,000.
