Palo Alto High School Considers Moving Back Morning Bell

PALO ALTO (KCBS) _ Good news for bleary-eyed high school students in Palo Alto. Gunn High School is looking at moving its start time to later in the morning to give students more opportunity to catch at least a few extra minutes of sleep.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

As it is now, classes at Gunn High School start at 7:55 a.m., but officials are considering moving the start time to 8:20 a.m.

"I'm excited," said Gunn Freshman Becka Henderson. "We'd get more sleep, and probably work better in the day."

Many parents are in support of the idea, but others say that simply moving the school day forward isn't enough to reduce student stress. Ken Dauber, a member of "We Can Do Better Palo Alto," said the school district needs to look at other problem areas as well.

"Homework, curriculum, counseling," said Dauber. "We need to figure out what works and implement those changes uniformly across both of our high schools."

Gunn administrators were not available for comment. Department heads are expected to talk about moving the school start time forward during their regular meeting on Wednesday.
