Future Of California State Parks Remains Uncertain

SACRAMENTO (KCBS) – A last minute agreement on a federal budget seems to have spared national parks, but the same cannot be said for state parks in California.

Governor Jerry Brown instructed the state parks department to draw up a list of parks to close by mid-February, all part of a cost-saving measure that could help save the state some $20 million.

Officials have told the Marin Independent Journal that dozens of parks have made the closure list, but that list has not yet been revealed.

KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:

Louise Robinson was on a visit to Olompali State Park in Novato on Saturday and said she's troubled by the prospects of parks closing.

"It is troubling. I'm trying to take my son to the state parks right now just to make sure he gets to experience them before they possibly close," she said.

Robinson is like many who are frustrated by the uncertainty of which parks will actually be closed. The release date has been pushed back because more cuts may need to be made as legislators work to come to a budget agreement.

The hope is that a list will be made available in the next month, after Governor Brown's May revised budget is released.
