San Francisco Mayor Lee Not Happy With Finalists Police Chief Candidates

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- After extensive interviews, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is reportedly not happy with any of the top three candidates to become the new chief of police.

Three names have been submitted to the mayor, two of which are insiders, Capt. Greg Suhr and Cmdr. Daniel Mahoney, and according to the Chronicle a third is an outsider. Mayor Lee has given no timeline when he will announce his pick.

Former Police Commissioner Peter Keane said it should be an outsider, but the job could last just a few months until a new mayor takes over. Keane added that many of the problems with the police department, endemic over the last ten years, weren't able to be resolved under former chief Gascon's brief tenure.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

Keane said that unfortunately someone who has a secure job in another area would look at San Francisco's police chief vacancy as a temporary gig and that the department has "many other problems" to deal with in reference to recent allegations of police misconduct.

In the meantime Jeff Godown, brought in by former Chief Gascon, continues as interim chief and is not likely to become the next top cop.
