Oakland Father Killed As Family's SUV Flips Over On I-80

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- An Oakland man headed to Reno with his family was killed when the SUV he was driving crashed and overturned on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in Albany on Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened about 10 a.m. just west of Buchanan Street.

The man, identified as 48-year-old Napolean Quintero, was driving a white Ford Explorer with his wife and two children, ages 10 and 12, at about 65 mph when he suddenly veered to the left then overcorrected and lost control. The SUV rolled multiple times before coming to rest, CHP Sgt. Trent Cross said.

Quintero was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife had a broken leg and the children suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The wife was on the phone at the time of the crash, Cross said.

"The wife was talking to some other family members who were also going to head up to Reno today," he said.

The family members told the CHP the line went dead, and that when they called back there was no answer, according to Cross. When they finally got through after a few minutes, they heard sirens and commotion.

It is unclear whether Quintero lost control because he was somehow distracted, but Cross said there is no indication alcohol was a factor in the crash.

He said investigators hope to speak with the wife later Monday.

Most of eastbound I-80 was blocked afterward as emergency crews responded to the scene. Lanes reopened shortly after noon.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
