Charges Sought In Union Square Shooting Of German Tourist

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) --- The family of a German tourist who was killed near Union Square eight months ago is visiting San Francisco to remember a woman killed in a tragic shooting, and try to gain some closure in the case.

The killing of 50-year-old Mechthild Schroer on August 8th at Mason and Geary streets stunned many in San Francisco.

Schroer was an innocent bystander who was shot in a gun battle between groups of teenagers outside a party as she and her husband searched for a place to dine.

Schroer was on vacation celebrating her anniversary and her birthday.

Arrests were made following the shooting, but no charges have been filed - According to San Francisco police, that could soon change.

KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:

Police Chief Jeff Godown said Monday that investigators have been pursuing leads and handed the case over to the District Attorney's Office at the end of last week.

"I'm hoping that the district attorney is going to come back in the next couple of days with their response to us," he said.

Godown hopes to get warrants to go out and pick up the suspects. He said there could be anywhere from two to five suspects involved.

District Attorney George Gascon plans to meet with the Schroer family on Wednesday.
