SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The best surfers in the world will be coming to San Francisco this fall for a stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour.
The event, scheduled for early November, will be the first major surf contest held at Ocean Beach in more than a decade.
Bob Wise, owner of the Wise Surf Shop on the Great Highway, said surfers competing in the Rip Curl Pro Search event should have no problems handling the unique elements of the San Francisco waters.
“They’ve surfed places that are thicker and more powerful. Maybe not as cold and as strong a current, but they won’t have a problem with it,” Wise said.
KCBS’ Anna Duckworth Reports:
Rob Aschero works at the surf shop and said San Francisco was chosen in part because of a recent trend.
“Right now in surfing, the marketing is geared towards urban surf and showing people that there is surfing in places like New York and San Francisco, spots that are not so tropical,” Aschero said.
Wise said his only concern is parking, which he understands will be off-site, with shuttles to handle the thousands of spectators event organizers are expecting.
The contest window for the event runs from November 1-11, 2011.
