San Francisco Police Chief Considers Station Closure

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – San Francisco's police chief is looking at every angle within the department as a means to deal with the budget deficit.

That could even mean the closure of the Park Police District Station, which along with staffing cuts, is under consideration.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

"To reallocate the resources and cut the district up based on the other nine districts and to still be able to serve the community and give them the police service that they want," said San Francisco Police Chief Jeff Godown about a possible closure.

But San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi called it a bad plan.

"I now see exactly what the prize is for us in District 5 and the Western Addition, having the highest drop in violent crime citywide," said Mirkarimi. "Holding nearly three years and then closing down a police station, I think they're crazy."

Supervisor Scott Wiener, who also has constituents in the district, agrees and said it's a terrible deal.

"There is plenty of crime that happens there and I think it would undermine public safety to close that station," said Wiener.

Godown's plan also calls for staffing cuts at the other nine stations, something he said may be the result of budget cuts and fewer police officers.
