Stolen Pickup Found Submerged In Oakland Creek

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A stolen pickup truck was recovered Thursday morning from the water near the Overstock.com Coliseum in Oakland, a fire department battalion chief said.

Emergency crews began a rescue operation because it was unclear at first if anyone was inside the truck, which was spotted mostly submerged in Elmhurst Creek at about 8:25 a.m. near 7101 Edgewater Drive, Battalion Chief Eleanor Bolin-Chew said.

"We didn't find anybody in there," she said. "(But) that doesn't mean there wasn't anybody."

A diver was sent down to put chains around the truck so it could be pulled toward shore with a rescue rig, Bolin-Chew said. A tow truck then hauled it the rest of the way out of the water.

It turned out the truck had been reported stolen on Tuesday.

No one was injured during the recovery effort, which lasted until  about 9:35 a.m.
