Oakland Mayor Unveils Worst Case Scenario Budget
OAKLAND (KCBS) -- If Oakland's labor unions don't agree to pension concessions and if voters don't approve an $80 parcel tax, drastic comes will be coming to all city departments.
Interim City Administrator Lamont Ewell, who helped Quan present the budget, said public safety was a priority.
"Based on the mayor's direction we are actually hoping to bring back 20 police officers this year," said Ewell.

Mayor Quan elaborated by saying the officers would be re-hires and that it would work, but that there would be a general reduction in workforce without the firing of personnel.
"We're moving back the cost of a police academy. A police academy costs about $4 million," said the mayor.
Public works and Oakland's library staff would be hit especially hard under the mayor's worst-case scenario budget that calls for the elimination of 368 jobs. Oakland faces a two-year $58 million deficit.
