Democrats Win Delay Of DMV Notices In Budget Fight

SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) -- Democratic lawmakers have approved a delay in sending vehicle registration renewal notices to drivers, giving them more time to work on a California budget that maintains a tax on vehicles.

The California Senate on Monday approved SB94, which directs the Department of Motor Vehicles to delay renewal notices for at least one month, starting with drivers who have registrations due on July 1.

That's the date a temporary increase in the vehicle license fee is scheduled to expire. The one-half percentage point reduction would save a driver $75 for a $15,000 car.

Democrats, led by Gov. Jerry Brown, have sought to extend the tax to help ease close a $15.4 billion deficit.

The Assembly already approved the bill, which now goes to the governor for consideration.
