Santa Rosa Man Gets 25 Years For Stepdaughter Rape Ordeal

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) – A Santa Rosa man was sentenced to 25 years in prison Tuesday for molesting and sexually assaulting his underage stepdaughter for 18 months.

Alan Scott Randel, 55, was convicted in January of three counts of forcible rape , child abuse and intimidating the girl between Jan. 1, 2008 and June 13, 2009, Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch said.

The sexual assaults began when the girl was 15 and her mother, who was married to Randel, moved out of the house, Ravitch said.

Randel was strict and controlling. He limited his stepdaughter’s time with friends and checked her cellphone calls and text messages, Ravitch said.

He also grounded the girl for extended periods of time and prohibited her from eating and taking bathroom breaks, Ravitch said.

Randel threatened to kill his stepdaughter and force her to live on the streets if she told anyone about the sexual assaults, Ravitch said.

The girl finally disclosed to friends what was happening, Ravitch said.

Randel denied everything to Santa Rosa police but later admitted having sex with the girl but said it was consensual, Ravitch said. He also admitted he had a bad temper and assaulted his stepdaughter, Ravitch said.

Sonoma County Superior Court Judge Arthur Wick sentenced Randel to 25 years in prison and required him to register as a sex offender for life, Ravitch said.

“A violent sexual predator has been brought to justice,” Ravitch said.

“The survivor is aware of the sentence, and while relieved that the criminal proceedings have concluded, will live with the memory of this terrible ordeal for the rest of her life,” Ravitch said.

Will live with the memory? More like relive the nightmare repeatedly! It will effect so many areas of her life. It’s not even a life she will live, but survive each moment of the day. Her chances of having a normal life or any sort of healthy relationship is very unlikely. She will not have the opportunities that other people have that have not gone through what she has. It will effect her life, her chidrens lives, her family life. And most anyone who comes in contact with the nightmares she will have to endure for the rest of her surviving day’s. Victum Witness will pay for up to 16 therapy sessions. But most commonly they only pay for 11 visits. Can any of you say that 11 visits of therapy would help you through a marriage gone wrong? Or anything that is life changing in the much lessser degree? NO! I don’t think so.. There needs to more given too help women or men who are surviviors of such hainess crimes. The therapy should include what ever kind they need and for as long as they need. This sort of devastation does not only effect her but all who she loves or may love in the future. May God bless her and heal her soul. The young innocent soul that has been stolen from her so violently.

actually, they don’t show a picture of the perp to protect the victim, troll

You are right on! Hopefully through her school district, state, city, and non profit orgs she will recieve the assitance she needs. I know many feel these programs are a waste of tax dollars (at times they are) but as someone who works (ed) for various orgs and the state she will probably need a year or more of therapy and support to get past this. Although, her experiences may never leave her the same. 25 years is a light punishment in my opinion.

  3. For truth and real justice says:

Accusing people of sexual abuse is the witch hunt of our time, and the punishments are becoming rediculously extreme and unfair. Carolyn Mills, your comments are false propaganda and totally one sided. Sex doesn’t automatically ruin people, it’s a normal part of life. It’s normal for a male to be attracted to a 15 year old, regardless of what this society tries to teach us. Sex between old and young people cuases outrage today, but most people don’t realize that it wasn’t always that way. The age of consent about 100 years ago was 7 to 10 in the USA. I’m not saying it should be that low now, but 25 years prison in this case is totally outrageous and unfair.

    1. Kage says:

Forciable rape, intimidation, molestation etc… that wasn’t viewed as normal 100 years ago. Although it was far less likely to convict someone then. This young lady will live on with the memory of Randell’s actions. She may experience mental problems in the future. As a social worker and therapist I see young ladies and young men daily that have been through this. 25 years is very fitting.

    2. concerned says:

hey dumb a** – a hundred years ago life expectancy was only to the age of 35 to 40… and NEVER was sex okay at the age of 7 to 10, check your history – what are you a pervert??

    3. maria says:

what country did you grow up in?! thankfully we have LAWS to protect our children .. yes a 15 year old is a child. She will have to live with the terror and humiliation her step father imposed upon her. And where is the mother?! How could she abandon her child to live with the step father?! The “mother” should be jailed for child endangerment …. lock her up forever.

    4. friday jones says:

Sounds like something a child molester would say to make himself seem less abnormal.

    5. trying to be objective says:

Your post scares me. There are, however, two things I agree with: 1) yes, sex is normal and doesn’t automatically ruin people; 2) it IS normal for an adult male to be physically attracted to a 15 year old. If you look back to our ancient ancestors, it seems likely they were having sex pretty much as soon as menstruation started. So, yes, that seems normal. Still, I don’t agree that in today’s society, it’s acceptable for an older person to go after a 15 year old–the age in which people are reaching emotional maturity has changed dramatically compared to 20,000 years ago, and that’s the real point of statutory rape. I’d say that the youngest age that sex was ever acceptable, except perhaps back in the Greek days (when it was acceptable for male mentors to have sex with their young male students), was upon puberty, which does NOT happen at 7 years old and never did! You insinuate that their sex was consensual, which was clearly not the case! And lastly, to start off your comment saying that this is a witch hunt…that’s just disturbing. So, to you, it’s not even worth investigating sexual assault? We should stop that witch hunt, right? No one gets raped! It’s just a case of an older person feeling their natural hormonal attraction to a little girl (then beating her and threatening her and raping her). Nothing abnormal there! I hope you get caught before you do some real harm….

    6. Coriolana Sinta says:

      Normal? Only for the taliban.

    7. lcff says:

I hope you get caught soon. Most of you all do, eventually. Don’t try to make excuses for your disgusting, twisted mind.

  4. that's not justice says:

why does she get a life sentence but he doesnt? he should be castrated and tortured until he dies.

“A violent sexual predator has been brought to justice,” Ravitch said.

i don’t think so… justice would be served if the victim got to perform the castration. the rapist should die and the mother should do time for leaving her daughter with that p.o.s.

  5. Outraged says:

For truth and real justice, you’re are right sex doesn’t ruin people for life but sexual abuse and rape do, YOU IDIOT.
Why on earth would a mother leave and leave her daughter with a controlling and abusive step father?

  6. JQP says:

FYI – and especially to the moron who thinks 25 years is ‘unfair’….

This perp did not just ‘have sex’ and it was NOT normal….The victim in this case has a life sentence of memories of being terrorized. Try reading a bit about PTSD for what that can mean.

So 25 years in prison is certainly NOT unfair. Moreover, this guy is not going anywhere even after he completes his prison term. He will undoubedly face a petition filed by the county district attorney to have the perp declared a SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATOR for which he certainly seems to meet the statutory criteria based upon the facts given. Once he is declared to be an SVP, he will be committed to a state mental hospital (‘hosprison’) for an INDETERMINATE period – basically it IS a life sentence for the perp. And in this case, it will be entirely appropriate.

TERRIBLE mother for leaving her daughter with a man like that. The mom should have charges filed on her for not protecting the daughter.

    2. Pearl says:

Yes! The mother needs to do time! There’s something wrong with her that she would leave her daughter alone with this guy. Where’s the mother? Appears she abandoned her responsibilities as regards her daughter. Hope CPS puts the daughter in a better living situation, and the mother in jail! To the Mother: If you’re reading all these reader comments, hope you understand you failed your daughter misterably, and that you should be doing time behind bars, too. Stories like this just break my heart.

  10. AUNT CRIT says:

FOR TRUTH- OK..WHAT? DID YOU SAY IT WS NORMAL FOR A GROWN MAN TO LUST AFTER A 15 Y/O GIRL?? JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE CONVINCED YOURSELF OF THAT, (OBVIOUSLY TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER) DOESN’T MEAN THAT EVERYONE ELSE FEELS THAT WAY. AND YES 100 YEARS AGO PEOPLE MARRIED YOUNG…MORE OUT OF ECONOMICAL HARDSHIP THAN ANYTHING…THIS STORY IS NOT ABOUT SEX.. AND YES SEX IS NORMAL…THIS STORY IS ABOUT RAPE..FORCIBLE RAPE OF A CHILD…THIS MAN ADMITTED TO HITTING HER/ THREATENING HER/ CONTROLLING HER/HOLDING HER HOSTAGE/ AND HAVING SEX WITH HER…BUT LET ME GET THIS RIGHT.. THE SEX WAS CONSENTUAL?? I AM SURE THE OTHER ABUSE WAS “DISCIPLINE” TOO RIGHT? OMG! YOU, MY FRIEND, IS WHAT’S TOTALLY WRONG WITH THE VOTING PUBLIC. EVER BEEN RAPED? EVER BEEN SODOMNIZED? EVER BEEN FORCED TO “PERFORM?” THEN YOUR ARGUEMENT SIR, IS ONE SIDED…AND IGNORANT TO SAY THE LEAST.

    1. Barak Obama says:

Actually, we do not know what the age of the girl is. She could be 17. to call her a “child” is a bit of a stretch. Clearly, she is under age and that is the point. But let’s not over dramatize the situation. the story is not clear on the facts of this case. 25 years seems severe given there are people who are paroled for murder in less time.

  11. Spike says:

How can anyone defend what this POS did? He’s a violent predator who has subjected a child to a lifetime of torment. A 55 yr old lusting after a 15 yr old is sick and depraved. Would any of his defenders feel the same way if it were a relative or close friend theirs? I say 25 yrs is not near enough punishment for this monster!

    1. 'A short note to Spike.. says:

She seem like an easy prey to him at the time. Boy was he ever wrong. He will be 80 years old when finish serving his time thats if he live through it.

  12. shantae says:

Apparently there is a pervert in the room trying to convince himself that its okay to forcibly RAPE children. This isn’t 100 years ago where people married young because they weren’t expected to live very long anyway, and it wasn’t 7 to 10 you pervert more like when you started menstruation around 12 to 13 years. You are defending a man who not only raped this girl but admitted to having sex with her and abusing her to boot. Her mother is a POS as well her daughter should kick her ass for everytime she was violated by that man.

  13. richard says:

“Randel was strict and controlling. He limited his stepdaughter’s time with friends and checked her cellphone calls and text messages, Ravitch said.”

I only want to point out that checking your daughters cellphone calls and text messages is NOT strict and controlling. In fact, I think that is something a responsible parent should be doing to ensure the safety of their child. This does not mean I condone rape btw, I’m just saying.

  14. JFK says:

Seeing the silver lining in this tragedy, the stepfather will not have an easy time in prison. if he is lucky he will get placed in a special protective unit. Most likely 23 hr in a cell and one hour of yard time. Due to overcrowding he might be put into General population. NOT GOOD FOR HIM! The other animals in prison make life extremely hard for “Kid Touchers and Rapists” This guy may think he was tough when forcing a little girl around but he will learn what tough really is. Many lifers have nothing to lose and find abusing these type of people a form of entertainment and atonement for their wrongdoings.
May he be given a toss from the top of the stairs a few times or a shower room shanking or learn exactly what violation feels like.

    1. Hey, JFK you are high !!!! says:

You sound like you speak from experience?

How can you be sure he won’t be one of the ones that shanks the other guy?

And curiously, you present the prison system as a system that is primarily about brutality and “vengeance.” If that is so and it reflects our social values at large, then why restrict our values only for prison. Why not share that love with society at large? I know, let’s make the whole world one big prison where everyone kills everyone else for no other reason than sport. Oh wait, that would make us all prisoners and would vitiate the whole idea of laws, justice, crimes or punishment.

You see, if you are PRO violence and PRO prison death squad, then you cannot really be that against what this guy did. It’s a pittance really. Contract killers, homicidal maniacs, serial killers, etc. And then this guy. I love how you present this sort of NOBILITY w/in the real of the damned. That somehow there will be this poetic justice that is meted out by these noble savages.

Sorry to burst your bubble dude, but that’s not what happens. They’ll probably become pals, deal drugs, teach each other how to commit better and more complex crimes. He’ll join the Aryan Brotherhood and probably bribe the jailers and contractors. He’ll make calls back to people and do favors, pay off family members of guys in the joint.

You’ve been watching way too many CSI episodes. Poetic justice is a comic book reality dude. Prison is about survival and playing every card to get your way. And your ‘rap sheet’ is not public knowledge. There is no “public file drawer” where Bugsy and Raphie sneak into with their dog Petey like some 1930s Jimmy Cagney film.

  15. CATHY KELLEY says:

Whether it is a child, teenager, adult, man, woman, boy, or girl, forcing abuse of ANY kind on any other human being is unacceptable, no matter where in this world you may live!!!
How is any type of force, or abuse, including verbal, justifiable? Violence & abuse scar even friends of a friend if they have any heart! And,IMO, any male or female adult that is that f**kin hard up that they have to force themselves on a child is the sickest of the sick, & they should all be sent to an island out in the middle of the farthest point in an ocean, all together for the rest of their lives. Let them force & abuse each other til doomsday!

    1. Bok Choy says:

Um, I think that’s called China.
