South Bay, Peninsula Parcel Taxes Headed For Victory

SAN JOSE (KCBS) –Nearly all of the parcel taxes on the ballot in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties appear to be passing from a special election day Tuesday.

The parcel taxes will fund local school districts, which have been struggling under tough state budget cuts.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

Kevin Gordon, president of the state's largest school advocacy group said that the public is starting to get a realistic sense of just what's facing public schools.

"After three years of consecutive, very deep budget cuts there aren't a lot of options," said Gordon. "So if education is a priority, then we've got to do something about it."

The election results still have to be certified by county registrars.

Only one parcel tax in the region failed. Daly City's Jefferson Union High School won't be seeing any extra money after the district failed to meet the difficult two-thirds majority to pass Measure C.

It was a different story in the East Bay, where parcel taxes did not fare nearly as well as those on the Peninsula and in Santa Clara County.

Measures in the John Swett District in Rodeo, Pleasanton Unified and Union City's New Haven Unified all failed to pass muster with voters.

However, voters in Lafayette did approve a measure that is expected to bring $6 million to the Lafayette School District.

In Marin County, voters overwhelmingly approved Measure A, a parcel tax that's expected to save 15 teacher jobs in the Dixie School District.
