Worker Severely Hurt In Forklift Accident At Fremont Tech Firm

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is investigating an accident that left a man trapped beneath a forklift in Fremont Tuesday afternoon, a department spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Emergency crews responded to KNT Manufacturing at 4280 Technology Drive shortly after 1 p.m. and discovered a 50-year-old employee with his leg completely trapped beneath the forklift's wheel well area, according to Fremont Fire Department officials.

The man suffered severe injuries, and paramedics provided advanced life support measures as firefighters stabilized the forklift, used airbags to lift the machine, and extricated the victim.

The man was airlifted to Stanford Hospital, where his condition was not available Wednesday.

Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Krisann Chasarik said the department was still on the scene Wednesday gathering information about the accident.

Officials will be investigating the circumstances that led to the accident and trying to determine whether the employees were properly trained, had the right safety equipment, and were using properly maintained equipment, Chasarik said.

Cal/OSHA investigations typically take about three or four months but can last as long as six months, she said.
