Police Officer Hurt In San Leandro Crash; Driver Arrested
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - A police officer was sent to a hospital after a man crashed his car into the officer's car in San Leandro Thursday night, a police spokesman said.
The officer was driving in the 2100 block of Williams Street at about 8:25 p.m. when the suspect, Alfredo Botelho, 51, sped past the officer, police Lt. Jeff Tudor said.
Botelho, of Hayward, then turned from Williams Street onto Doolittle Drive and sped up to about 80 mph in a 40 mph zone, Tudor said.
The officer lost sight of the suspect after Botelho swerved past a fire engine that was responding to an unrelated incident near Doolittle Drive and Davis Street, Tudor said.
The officer turned onto Davis Street and saw Botelho driving at him in the wrong lane of traffic, Tudor said.
"He tried to put on the brakes and evade the suspect, but Botelho crashed into the officer," he said.
The officer wasn't seriously injured and was able to detain Botelho at the scene, Tudor said.
The cars, however, didn't fare so well, Tudor said.
"There was pretty severe damage done to both vehicles. They had to be towed," he said.
The officer was taken to the hospital and was later released, Tudor said.
Botelho was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
