Animal Update: Be Kind To Animals Week

(KCBS) - KCBS' Jeff Bell talks to Dr. Jack Aldridge of The San Francisco SPCA about Be Kind to Animals Week that happens in May.

This special week was started in 1915 by the American Humane Association. It's a week that celebrates the bond between humans and their animals, and the happiness they bring us. It's also a chance to encourage others, especially children to be conscious of being kind to animals. Although children seem to innately love little creatures, early lessons are essential to teach them the proper respect for all non-human animals.

There is an annual Be Kind to Animals Kid Contest that recognizes kids who really embrace the task of making their communities better and safer places for animals. Many shelters like the SF SPCA have what's called Humane Education programs which offer summer camps and class-room visits to encourage kids to engage with animals and enhance the bond between children and animals.

Anyone on a computer can also get involved spreading awareness. Social media has been an amazing tool for causes and fundraisers or all kinds. There are many websites, including americanhumane.org that make it easy to make your voice heard and advocate for animal safety and well being. And of course it is a reminder to be thoughtful and diligent about the welfare of our own animals – to make sure they are in good health, up to date on vaccinations and happy campers.
