Dangerous Boating Season Predicted On The Delta

MARTINEZ (KCBS) – The boating season on the Delta could be more of a challenge than in years past because officials say water levels are higher, colder and perhaps more treacherous.

KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:

Gloria Sandoval of the California Department of Boating and Waterways said that runoff from this winter and springs exceptionally large snowmelt could create shockingly cold water.

"The water will be colder," said Sandoval. "Lifejackets are recommended because they provide an additional layer of protection, which can prevent hypothermia.

Last year was a particularly bad year on the Delta, with two fatal boat collisions, and three drownings.

In addition to those cold waters, recreation officials say trees that used to be exposed above the water surface may now be underwater, which can be dangerous for personal watercraft users, or swimmers.
