Mt. Diablo Unified Schools To Lay Off 111

CONCORD (CBS / AP) -- More than 100 teachers and other employees in the Mt. Diablo school system will be losing their jobs, but school officials say that's fewer than had been expected.

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District board on Tuesday approved the layoffs of 111 teachers and what's termed "certificated employees."

Julie Braun-Martin, an assistant superintendent with the district, told the Contra Costa Times that school officials were anticipating laying off 180 employees. But because attrition was greater than anticipated, school officials were able to reduce the number of layoffs.

Board officials blamed the job cuts on reduced state funding.

The district operates 56 schools and programs in the East Bay.
