Vacaville CHP Officer Arrested, Accused Of Target Store Burglaries

VACAVILLE (CBS SF) - A California Highway Patrol officer has been arrested on suspicion of stealing an Xbox gaming system and other electronic merchandise from a Target store inVacaville, police Sgt. Jeff King said.

Shawn Hammonds, 36, of Vacaville, allegedly stole the game system around 4 p.m. Monday, King said.

Target employees told police it was the fourth time Hammonds had stolen property from the store at 3000 Harbison Drive, King said. The value of the stolen merchandise is $1,359.53, King said.

It is believed that Hammonds sold the merchandise over the Internet, King said.

"Unfortunately, these types of crimes and investigations are not uncommon for law enforcement. What is uncommon in this case is that Hammonds is employed as an officer with the California Highway Patrol," King said.

The CHP did not immediately return a call for comment.

King said a witness provided the theft suspect's license plate number on Monday, and Hammonds was arrested after police pulled over his car, King said.

Hammonds was booked into Solano County Jail on four counts of commercial burglary. He was later released after posting $30,000 bail, King said.
