EMERYVILLE (KCBS) – As tens of thousands of people commuted by bicycle Thursday for the Bay Area’s 17th annual Bike To Work Day, one East Bay company was honored for encouraging its employees to bike to work every day.

KCBS’ Doug Sovern Reports:

Biking to work isn’t just a once-a-year thing at Clif Bar in Emeryville, where Joe Phillips actually gets paid extra to commute by bike from Piedmont.

“We get $3 per day extra to ride to work,” said Phillips.

The company also gives workers $500 to buy a bike.

George Thoma pedals in from the Laurel District of Oakland with his two-year-old Bridget on the back, dropping her off at the onsite daycare center.

“It’s pretty easy to ride your bike to work at Clif Bar because we have great facilities here, a locker room and showers, plus people don’t look at you weird if you’re walking around in your kit, nobody thinks anything of it,” said Thoma.

There are showers, a gym, secure bike parking, a massage therapist and even a hair salon.

Clif Bar’s Kate Torgerson is proud that the company’s being honored as one of the Bay Area’s most Bike Friendly Businesses, and said that it pays back far more than it costs.

“All of our bottom-lines are equally weighted, so those are as important as being a profitable company for us,” said Torgerson.
