Cal Names Zach Maynard Starting QB

BERKELEY (CBS / AP) — California coach Jeff Tedford said transfer Zach Maynard will be the team's starting quarterback to open the 2011 season.

Tedford made the announcement Saturday, two weeks after the Golden Bears finished spring practice. Cal opens training camp Aug. 6 and plays its season opener Sept. 3 at Candlestick Park against Fresno State.

Tedford said Maynard's ability to run adds a dimension to Cal's offense and gives the team the best opportunity to win.

Maynard sat out last year after transferring from Buffalo. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Maynard completed 57.5 percent of his passes for 2,694 yards and 18 TDs with 15 interceptions in 2009 for Buffalo. He was also Buffalo's third-leading rusher with 300 yards.
