3 Cal Poly SLO Students Raped In 9 Day Span

SAN LUIS OBISPO (CBS / AP) -- A third Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student has been raped while she was intoxicated and unconscious, campus police said.

The latest victim said she was assaulted on Sunday in the Poly Canyon Village dormitory, where another woman was raped on May 12.

Suspects have been identified in connection with the two incidents, but no arrests have been made, campus police said.

Dormitory residents are allowed to drink in their rooms if they are over 21.

Another woman reported that she was raped on May 7 during a party at an off-campus fraternity house.

Cal Poly student Joseph Trupiano, 23, turned himself in to San Luis Obispo city police last week and was booked for investigation of sexual assault. He was released on $100,000 bail.

The three attacks appear to be unrelated, university Police Chief Bill Watton told the San Luis Obispo County Tribune. He declined to say whether the victims were drugged.

Alerts about the assaults were posted on the campus police website.

In a statement, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong said he was disturbed that some students saw others drinking excessively at the May 7 party and "did nothing to keep each other safe." He called for a change in campus culture

"A large number of Cal Poly students attended the party; many drank to reckless excess, and many were under age," he said. "This is not merely unacceptable behavior; this is deplorable, contemptible, infuriating behavior."

Armstrong has asked student government leaders and Student Affairs Vice President Cornel Morton to head a task force to examine ways of reducing drug and alcohol abuse and discouraging sexual assaults.
