Non-Profit Donates 50 New Beds To Foster City Homeless Shelter

FOSTER CITY (KCBS) -- Fifty brand new beds were donated to people transitioning out of homelessness at the Shelter Network's Warehouse in Foster City, Saturday morning.

The beds were donated by a Southern California-based non-profit called A Good Night's Sleep. Jennifer Kenning started the organization last year after finding out how difficult it can be for people moving out of homelessness to get big ticket furniture items into their new places.

"What happens is people get in permanent shelters, but they sleep on floors for years in some cases," said Kenning.

KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:

Brian Simmons was among the first to pick up a bed. He got out of drug treatment in December and moved out of a homeless shelter into his own home in Redwood City in February.

"I've been sleeping on a futon mattress on the floor. I had to do what I had to do to survive. The significance of this to me is just beyond words," said a grateful Simmons.

Maria Duzon with the Shelter Network, a human service agency located on Hillsdale Boulevard, said the 20 double beds and 30 twin beds complete with mattresses, box springs and frames will help many of the homeless people on the Peninsula.

"The average family that we serve is a mom with two kids. We have over 4,000 individuals coming through our program every year. 1,700 of those are children," said Duzon.
