SFPD Sees Infusion Of New Officers

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) –- More than a dozen new police officers will soon be on the streets of San Francisco. The group are known as 'lateral transfers' –- officers who have quit their force, and moved to another department. Since they have already been trained elsewhere, SFPD spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield said that they only have to be taught the culture, and how to write reports specific to San Francisco.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

"One of the advantages to hiring lateral transfers is that they have already been trained post-police academy so you can get them out on the street much faster," said Dangerfield. "It only takes eight weeks to take a lateral candidate in because they've already had basic training and they're just now learning the policies of San Francisco."

Four of the 14 officers coming in have transferred from Oakland, where there is very little job security because of budget cuts.
