Pacifica School Raises Money For Whale Watching Platform

PACIFICA (KCBS) – A Pacifica elementary school that has a great view of the ocean is trying to put together enough materials and funds to build a platform where students can watch migrating whales.

Sunset Ridge Elementary School sits on a ridge with a great view of the Pacific, which gives students a first row seat to one of the best science classrooms possible. But right now, Sunset Ridge Principal Ellie Cundiff said that the view is going to waste.

"We are located on a hill, so right now there is a fence that kind of blocks the view," said Cundiff. "Our idea is to build a platform that is up a little bit so that we can take advantage of our view."

A hardware and home improvement store may donate materials to build the platform, but Cundiff admits there are more permits to obtain, and the platform needs engineering approval to make sure it's safe.
