Gang Member Convicted In 2 Oakland Murders
OAKLAND (CBS/AP) -- An Oakland man has been convicted of fatally shooting two men on the same day because he thought they belonged to rival gangs.
Alameda County jurors Wednesday found 30-year-old Ivan Ordaz guilty of murder and other felony charges for the Sept. 1, 2007 killings.
Ordaz was convicted of first-degree murder for killing 19-year-old Tomas Melero Smith, who was hanging out with friends when investigators say Ordaz jumped out of a car and shot him.
Jurors also convicted Ordaz of second-degree murder in 22-year-old Allan Mejia's death. Prosecutors said Ordaz fired into a car with Mejia inside during what he thought was a gang fight.
Deputy district attorney John Brouhard said the victims were not gang members.
Ordaz faces life in prison without parole when he is sentenced in August.
