Pleasant Hill Apartment Fire Ignites Stored Ammunition
PLEASANT HILL (CBS SF) - A fire in Pleasant Hill on Wednesday night displaced four people and set off ammunition that was being stored in the apartment where the blaze started, a fire marshal said Thursday.
The one-alarm fire was reported at 10:32 p.m. at 264 Douglas Lane, near Oak Park Boulevard, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Lewis Broschard said.
Firefighters arrived within about five minutes and found heavy smoke and flames coming from a second-story apartment at one end of the two-story, 22-unit building.
The building was evacuated as heat from the blaze caused some live ammunition stored in the apartment to go off, Broschard said.
Firefighters had the blaze under control within about 15 minutes.
No injuries were reported, and the ammunition didn't cause any additional damage, Broschard said.
The fire, however, destroyed the apartment where it started, and smoke damaged three adjoining units.
The American Red Cross was called to help four adults with temporary housing.
The cause of the fire remained undetermined Thursday, but Broschard said it was not considered suspicious.
