New Radio System For Oakland First Responders

OAKLAND (KCBS) ---- Oakland city officials unveiled a new radio system, in the works for years, which they claim will improve emergency communications.

The system that cost $10 million to install is called P25, a digital radio system instead of analog. Mayor Jean Quan said it means first responders will be able to hear each other in former dead spots such as the hills.

Lt. Carlos Gonzalez with the police department's communications division said the system should eliminate highly publicized officer complaints that they can't hear dispatchers.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

"It's a seamless transition," he said. "It's very simple for the officers."

Other agencies are contemplating going to P25, but there have been money and technical issues.

Oakland used federal funds to pay for its system.
