Caltrans Reopens Highway 1 South Of Big Sur
CARMEL (CBS/AP) - Motorists and bicyclists can now travel the Pacific Coast Highway between Cambria and Carmel for the first time in nearly three months.
The California Department of Transportation on Thursday reopened a portion of Highway 1 that was shut down by a massive landslide in April 14.
Since then, officials have spent about $5 million removing a hillside's worth or rock and dirt in southern Monterey County.
A series of landslides caused by heavy rain have closed various parts of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast since mid-March.
Drivers will need to slow-down in some areas where cleanup and repairs are still underway, but Rody Salkeld of the Cambria Chamber of Commerce says businesses will be thrilled by the highway's reopening.
