Garrido To Be Held In Same Prison Unit As Manson

SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) — The man sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping, raping and holding Jaycee Dugard captive for 18 years arrived at a state prison Thursday, where he will have some notorious neighbors.

Phillip Garrido, 60, will be housed in Corcoran State Prison’s Protective Housing Unit for inmates whom officials believe wouldn’t be safe in the general population, the California Department of Corrections said Thursday. The unit is the longtime home of 1960s cult killer Charles Manson and once housed convicted Robert F. Kennedy assassin Sirhan Sirhan.

Other inmates include John Albert Gardner III, who pleaded guilty last year to raping and killing two teens in San Diego County, as well as mass murderer Juan Corona and Michael Markhasev, the killer of Bill Cosby’s son.

Garrido was being held in a segregated cell before being moved to the protective unit, the department said. He was sentenced earlier this month to 431 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to snatching Dugard off a street in South Lake Tahoe in June 1991, when she was 11.

He held her captive in a secret backyard compound near Antioch. During her captivity, she gave birth to two daughters fathered by Phillip Garrido, the first when she was 14.

Garrido’s wife, Nancy Garrido, 55, began serving her decades-long sentence Wednesday at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. She also pleaded guilty to kidnapping and rape.

    2. Victor says:

Unknown, please make this honestly clear. Do you really hate Jaycee Dugard or are you really just lashing out at the Garridos for kidnapping the former 11-year old from South Lake Tahoe?

    3. Josh says:

Are you kidding me. She was 11 year old girl and scared. I can’t even imagine how her mind was working during that time. I will always believe every single word she said about her story.

  3. Bloodhounds says:

Too bad he can’t share a cell with Charlie. Hey unknown, she lived in fear starting as a 11 year old girl. You don’t what that creep was telling her! She feared for her life for 18 years! He should have never been let out on the first rape case!

  4. What the?! says:

This guy kidnapped, raped, and held this girl captive for 18 years… Now he’s in prison being protected! What am I missing here? Maybe gang bangers and drug dealers in prison should’ve followed this man’s footsteps to get better treatment in there?

  5. tn says:

First, we, the people, paid $20 million dollars for the parole departments ineptitude. Now we get to finance the Dugards with free room, meals, A/C, heating, health care, dental, cable and gym. What’s wrong with this picture? Tax waste yet again.

    1. dead_than_red says:

      ignorant tool.

    2. Victor says:

tn, California had to finance the Dugards because the Dugards were the ones who filed the claim (which is the first step before filing a lawsuit) against our state for not doing enough to rescue then-11 year old Jaycee Dugard from captivity by Philip and Nancy Garrido earlier.

  6. Dig it says:

And Charlie is his neighbor! How cool is that?

  7. The Walrus says:

Helter Skelter!! Don’t provide protection for this loser….and the rest will take care of itself.
