Jan Wahl Movie Review: 'Cars 2'

(KCBS) - KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews Pixar's latest sequel, Cars 2.

CARS 2 (PG)

Pixar..an amazing movie studio that changed the world of film..for the better. After the recent trifecta of Wall-e, Up and Toy Story 3..and their fabulous movies like Ratatouille and Monsters Inc setting a new level for animation with heart and imagination..this newest one, Cars 2, is a disappointment. It had to happen sometime..and we can tell from the wonderful short subject ahead of the film, this one is just a detour back to greatness. In Cars 2, a spy spoof is part of the fun, then it's the international Grand Prix, with our ol' pals Lightning McQueen and his trusty sidekick Mater. Some fantastic voicework here, especially Michael Caine and John Turturro. While there's some great messages about the environment, colorful characters and creative visuals..the action is repetitious and for the first time kind of boring. Having Mater tow this sequel, and the endless car chases and races, make it seem like we're running out of gas..Two and a half hats..get there for the marvelous Toy Story short..and looking forward to the next one from the cinematic wizards at Pixar.
