Driver Killed In San Jose I-280 Crash

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A 22-year-old man died Saturday morning when his vehicle went off an Interstate Highway 280 connector ramp in San Jose and hit an overcross support pillar, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man, an unidentified San Jose resident, was driving at a high rate of speed on the southbound I-280 transition ramp to State Route 87 when his Toyota Scion hit the road's eastern curb edge about 5:20 a.m., the CHP said.

The Toyota hit the guardrail and became airborne, hitting a support pillar and continuing across the transition ramp traffic lanes before coming to rest on its side.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt but died instantly when the car hit the pillar, the CHP said.

It was not known whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The ramp was closed for about 20 minutes to facilitate emergency operations.
