1 Killed, 6 Hurt When Vehicle Crashes Into San Jose Nursing Home

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- One person was killed and six injured Saturday morning when an elderly woman accidentally drove through a bay window into a common room at a San Jose nursing home, fire and police officials said.

Seven people sitting in the common room were injured during the crash, which was reported at 9:45 a.m. at the Amberwood Gardens home in the 1600 block of Peterson Avenue, fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

KCBS' Mark Seelig Reports:

Three of the injured parties were taken to trauma centers, and one died about 1 p.m., Gutierrez said. The other four victims were treated at local hospitals.

About 10 or 12 people were in the common room when the woman, who is 90, apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, San Jose police Sgt. Jason Dwyer said. The driver was not injured in the crash.

The woman doesn't live at Amberwood Gardens and was apparently on her way to visit someone there, Dwyer said.

A spokesperson for the nursing home did not return calls seeking comment.

The fire department responded to the crash with three engines, a truck and a battalion chief, Gutierrez said.

The nursing home did not need to be evacuated, Dwyer said.
