MARTINEZ (KCBS) – A four-year-old Martinez boy is in critical condition after being struck by a car on Saturday morning.

Martinez Police Sergeant Glenn Walkup said it happened around 10 a.m. Saturday morning on Vista Way near John Muir Elementary School, when the child’s mother got into her car.

“He had walked over to the right side of the driveway and when she turned into the driveway, she wasn’t able to see him and accidentally ran him over,” Walkup said.

Walkup said it appears the child’s mother was backing out of her driveway to provide a battery jump to a commercial service vehicle working at her house.  She struck her son when she pulled back into the driveway.

The child was rushed to Children’s Hospital Oakland where he is now on life support.

Investigators said it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.

A horrible tragedy. As a parent, when our kids even get little booboo’s, it turns our blood to ice. I can’t imagine the hell she’s going through right now.

Her race doesn’t matter. And it’s not about the mom right now, it’s about the little kid. If you can’t show some empathy, don’t comment.

I feel so badly for this child and his family. This day will forever be remembered and relived for the rest of the Mother’s life. She will break into a cold sweat each time she thinks about this and she will not be able to fall asleep with out crying each night. 6 years ago, my husband back up over our son when he was supposed to be in the house. I saw our son getting rolled under our truck and yelled in time before he was run over. Our son walked away with out a scratch but for my husband and me, we can still feel the sinking feeling we felt that day anytime we think about it. This was not anyone’s fault and doesn’t mean that the parent did anything wrong, this was an accident. At one time I would have assumed something different and I was wrong. Please, have a safe place that everyone stands to wave hello and goodbye and don’t move your car until you see everyone you love standing there. Pass this story along to everyone you know, you just might save a life.

I hugged my son today. I kissed him and told him how proud I am of him. He is three. I also slowed down and took time to pray for this family. I never want to imagine the pain they are feeling. Dear friends I do not know, you are loved. An accident! I am so deeply sorry for you. I will slow down and look again and agin for my child and neighbors.
