University Of California Lures Out-Of-State Freshmen Who Pay Higher Tuition
BERKELEY (KCBS) - One of every seven students enrolled at the University of California this fall will be a freshman from out of state who will pay an extra $23,000 in tuition.
Admissions officials said most of the 5,000 non-resident freshmen who notified the university they intend to register this fall will attend UC Berkeley, where they will make up nearly one-third of the incoming class.
"They began growing that population not just this year but in recent years," said Pamela Burnett, interim director of admissions for all 10 UC campuses.
Non-Californian freshmen have jumped from being just 8 percent of their class last year to 12 percent this year.
Nevertheless, Burnett conceded, enrollment at UC Merced remains well below expectations.
"We would like more people to appreciate everything that the newest campus has to offer."
