REDWOOD CITY (CBS/AP) — The lawyer for a San Mateo County man charged with child abuse after his son was burned in an oven says the 17-month-old climbed inside the appliance while his father slept.

Defense attorney Mara Feiger told jurors Friday that 20-year-old Gregory Colver Jr. of Daly City falsely confessed to holding the child in the 425-degree oven in order to teach him about its dangers.

Feiger said Colver told that story because the boy’s mother feared authorities would take the boy away if they knew he’d been unsupervised during the Dec. 28 incident. The toddler suffered second- and third-degree burns on his legs.

Prosecutor Shin-Mee Chang said it was “completely implausible” that such a young child could operate the oven and crawl inside without burning his hands, the San Mateo Daily Journal reports.

Colver faces approximately nine years in prison.

How can anyone with a conscience honestly argue that scenario happened. There is no way a toddler would crawl into an oven that was on!!!! Take a second and think, when crawling what would be the first thing to touch the hot oven? It would have been the kid’s hands! The article states the child sustained burns to its legs, which means this turd, who should not have ever had children held the kid in the oven. I hope he gets treated well in the prison shower!

The attorney should be charged with being a Moron who would do anything for a buck…

We have lost our honor, degnity and belief in God. This thing that went to law school has lost its life in the liberal belief that all men are created equil. Just hearing someone say that a a year and five month old baby opened an oven door and crwaled in disheartening. This is not a todler, but a baby. Seventeen months!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As an attorney – and a fairly liberal one – I find the defense in this case not only implausible, but outrageous. This guy would probably argue that people murdered in the Holocaust really wanted to stay in the ‘showers’ once the gas was turned on!

  6. Annie says:

I would be worried if any jury believed this to be a plausible explanation. I mean what person would think that “falsely confessing” to torturing your son is better than him being “unsupervised?” Not to forget the fact that this baby supposedly had the capability to not only turn the oven on to 425 but then opened the door and climbed in!!?? yeah right.

the attorney has a duty to lie to the jury for the defendant, and the jury understands that.
