Latest Shooting On Pittsburg Trail Accidental, Investigators Say

PITTSBURG (CBS SF) -- Investigators believe a shooting that injured a 14-year-old boy on the Delta de Anza Trail in Pittsburg on Sunday night was accidental, East Bay Regional Park District police Lt. Jon King said.

The shooting was reported shortly before midnight just west of Railroad Avenue, police said.

When officers arrived, they found the teen, a Pittsburg resident, with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, King said.

He was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he underwent surgery. King said to boy is expected to survive.

Investigators have learned that the boy was with a group of four to five area teens who were walking on the trail.

The group had a handgun that had been reported stolen in an earlier residential burglary and were firing it indiscriminately when the victim was shot, King said.

Investigators believe the teens may have been drinking alcohol as well, King said.

During the investigation, police found a backpack containing stolen property from several other residential burglaries that the teens may have committed.

As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting or the burglaries.

King said investigators would likely take the case to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's office to have charges filed before making any arrests.
